Abstract

Hydrocarbon gases are an important energy resource of the world economy. In most European countries, the share of hydrocarbon gases in the energy balance is 20–22%. Rising worldwide demand has resulted in a rapid increase in international trading of natural gas. On the other hand, hydrocarbon gases are an expensive source of energy as well as hazardous to the environment. This attracts attention to gas quality in terms of energy efficiency and environmental protection. In particular, the question of the impact of the quality of hydrocarbon gases on sustainable development goals—economic development that is conducted without depletion of natural resources is relevant. The issues discussed in this article are related to the main problems of the modern qualimetry of hydrocarbon gases, that is, of the methodology of evaluation of the quality of hydrocarbon gases. The theoretical, practical and normative-legal tasks of estimating the quality of various types of hydrocarbon gases—natural gas (NG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)—are described and analyzed. The generalized definition of the notion of hydrocarbon gases quality is given. A separate analysis of the gas quality indexes is carried out. The method of determining of the natural gas quality level as an energy source is developed. The method is based on the methodology of the qualimetrical measurement. This allows taking into account the influence of the component composition of a gas and all its physical and chemical properties on the gas calorific value and the energy content in it.
