Abstract
The First and Second World Wars had devastating consequences for Europe and other parts of the world. They were characterised by a massive loss of human lives and the devastation of countries within and outside of Europe. Europe alone lost over 39 million people to the war and political and economic systems in many countries were permanently altered (Kesternich et al. in The Effects of World War II on Economic and Health Outcomes Across Europe, 2012: 1). With the end of World War II in 1945, an ideological struggle referred to as the Cold War ensued between the two major powers, the United States of America (USA) and the defunct Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
