Abstract

Although the most common causes of weight loss are non-organic, weight loss can be an ominous sign of severe illness. The differential diagnosis of organic causes is extensive and includes multiple organ systems. Weight loss occurs due to decreased intake of nutrients, poor absorption of nutrients, or an increased metabolic state. In most cases, a detailed history and physical examination can help to narrow the differential diagnosis, and laboratory studies or imaging can aid in further evaluation. Non-organic causes of weight loss are diagnoses of exclusion, and organic causes must be evaluated before making these diagnoses. Endocrine causes of weight loss include diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, adrenal insufficiency, and hyperthyroidism and are discussed in this chapter in further detail.
