Abstract

Fatigue is one of the most common patient complaints, particularly among adolescents. Although it is usually due to environmental factors such as insufficient sleep or excessive stress or exertion, it can be a presenting symptom of underlying disease. In addition to non-endocrine diseases, thyroid disorders, hyperglycemia, hypercalcemia, and adrenal disorders may all present with fatigue. Weakness may also be a presenting sign of thyroid disorders, hypercalcemia, adrenal insufficiency, or Cushing syndrome. This chapter will discuss the differential diagnosis of fatigue or weakness, along with recommended initial evaluation, with particular attention to endocrine disorders that may present with these complaints.
