Endocrine Conditions in Pediatrics

Abstract

The thyroid gland is a butterfly (or bowtie)-shaped gland in the anterior neck and is tightly regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis. Thyroid hormones made from the gland exert a variety of effects on the body. Evaluation of thyroid dysfunction, most commonly increased or decreased thyroid hormone production due to problems within the thyroid, requires selection of appropriate thyroid laboratory studies. Imaging studies are sometimes used to help with diagnosis as well. Factors including medications, supplements, and non-thyroidal disease can interfere with thyroid laboratory assays, so obtaining a complete medical history is essential prior to ordering and evaluating thyroid function studies.
