Abstract
Laboratory evaluation is critical for the diagnosis of diabetes, as well as distinguishing between diabetes subtypes and long-term monitoring of glycemic control. Hemoglobin A1C, fasting plasma glucose, and an oral glucose tolerance test may each be used in the diagnosis of diabetes. The evaluation of autoantibodies, c-peptide, and insulin levels can aid the distinction between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. For long-term management of diabetes, hemoglobin A1c provides an assessment of glycemic control, although it should be interpreted with caution in conditions that affect red blood cell turnover. Evaluating for the presence of ketones is important in settings of hyperglycemia and illness to allow for early detection and prevention of progression to diabetic ketoacidosis.
