Abstract

The Southwest European region (targeted by the SUDOE regional policy), will have by the year 2050 a total of 40% population over 60 years old, which is expected to be the oldest population in Europe. Therefore, the need exists to develop products and services which are well adapted to the needs of the elderly population. This investment, and the associated business, focused on the elderly, is usually termed the Silver Economy.

The ICT4SILVER project, supported by the Intereg SUDOE programme, is a consortium of 9 enterprises within the Southwest Europe territory (namely Portugal, Spain and France) which interfaced with circa 25 SMEs to support the final stage development of technological products aimed at the senior population.

Within the context of this project, a specific work has been conducted on studying user interaction and redesigning the graphical interfaces of three products. This paper describes that analysis and redesign effort as well as a broader proposal of design guiding principles (DGP) for digital interfaces aimed at the elderly. These DGP are divided in three types of guidelines: senior user characteristics, learning processes, and UX (user experience)/UI (user interface) design.

The main goal of this work was the application of the proposed DGP on the digital interfaces of three products in the scope the ICT4Silver project, namely: ‘ArkeaOnLife’, ‘PhysioSensing’, and ‘Kwido’.
