Abstract

When crisis strikes, there are three central aspects that enable SME to not only survive but to utilize them to gain a visible advantage once the crisis subsides: complexity, capacity, and competence. Particularly in crisis, those three factors act as a catalyst (both positive and negative) and are closely interwoven in a network of effects, which can, to a certain extent, be influenced by the entrepreneur himself. In this paper, complexity, capacity, and competence are aligned in a comprehensive approach according to common innovation management models like Business Model Canvas as well as methods for analyzing industry rivalry for assessing their effects on SME during an economic crisis. The aim of this paper is to develop a complexity-reducing approach that is intended to actively support SMEs in crisis navigation and emphasizing the importance of innovations for growth.
