Abstract
Recent global health concerns forced businesses to temporarily suspend operations, redesign environments, and reimagine systems of interaction. Considering the economic consequences of reduced customer throughput and the liability of exposing customers to a dangerous respiratory disease, this paper simulates one area of retail stores where customers are forced to congregate, checkout counters and queues. Multiple simulations were constructed and run to examine the effects of customers per hour and checkout queue type on profitability and the likelihood of agents being forced to cross the risk distance threshold of being closer than six feet to another individual.
