Abstract
The increasing emergence of social and healthcare costs due to constant ageing trends of the world population requires to find new solutions to support and prolong people’s independence within the everyday living environments. A research pool among Italian universities, industries and public agencies for the management of services to the person is developing a project called Habitat, aiming at elaborating and testing a platform based on the Internet of Things, thence enabling to create supportive and reconfigurable environments by implementing, improving or re-designing some of the objects of everyday use. The research methodology will be that of the User Centred Design, while the design tool for giving solutions to the end-users’ needs is the Quality Function Deployment (QFD). This article wants to investigate the role of design research within the Habitat project, and it will focus on the definition of the characteristics and contributions of design methods applied to a research project aimed at developing useful innovation for real users by a multidisciplinary team.

According to a demographic and social study developed by the OECD (i.e. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), today about 12% of the world population is aged 60 or over, and such data is expected to grow to 21% by 2050. The ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health) is the new tool conceived by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for describing and measure people’s health and disability. However, ICF is not merely a classification concerning individuals suffering from physical or mental disablements, but it is applicable to every subject despite one’s health condition, when there is the necessity to evaluate bodily, personal, or social statuses. Furthermore, it represents a true revolution in the conceptualization of disability, also considering -for the first time- contextual and environmental factors”. The term Technology Readiness Level (TRL), which could also be translated as Level of Technological Maturity, addresses a process for the evaluation of the maturity level of a determined technology. It is based on a value scale from 1 to 9, where 1 is the lowest value corresponding to the definition of basic principles, and 9 is the highest, corresponding to a system already exploited in an operative and commercialised environment. In our specific case, TRL 5 corresponds to a “technology validated in relevant environment (industrially relevant environment in the case of key enabling technologies)”. Elderly people’s life has become considerably longer, however also increasing the presence of both physical and mental impairment. In Italy, such period is estimated to range between 6, 5 and 7 years.
