Abstract

Privatization and deregulation will not only intensify competition in power market but also lead to additional production and consumption. This is likely to put a strain on the transmission system and congest the system. Hence, congestion management is a basic problem of transmission management. In this work, an analysis tool for power market is designed to solve congestion management problem. The tool develops an interface between Power World Simulator professional software tools to compute power flow. The tool analyzes power flow results, while batch processing of large case studies is done in IEEE 30-bus system to simulate the power market and validate the proposed method. The results illustrate that after including Static Var Compensator, the amount of re-dispatched power lessens drastically resultant in an optimal operating point closer to that influenced by the market settlement. It is also founded that Static Var Compensator is a viable option for congestion management problem, both from the technical and from the cost efficiency point of views.
