Abstract
The crafting of a coherent, concise and accurate cytology report is something that carries with it the pride of being a diagnostician. This very practical aspect of the daily work of a cytopathologist is seldom formally covered in training programmes—however, it is no less important than being able to pick up key diagnostic features under the microscope.
This chapter lays out the specific elements of a cytology report, provides suggestions on how to organise the report and also discusses the rationale behind the writing of comments.
An additional point of interest that is highlighted is the subjectivity in diagnostic terms and phrases used, such as ‘suggestive of’ or ‘cannot exclude’. Lastly, several examples of cytology reports with comments are also presented.
