Abstract
Rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) allows for immediate evaluation of specimen adequacy and also for optimal specimen triage and provisional reporting. In the course of providing ROSE, one will learn that the evaluation of adequacy is nuanced and varies from case to case. Clinical circumstances such as the location of the lesion and the patient’s fitness for histologic biopsy are some factors that will be highlighted. One of the most important practices in ROSE and provisional reporting is close communication with the clinical team, particularly when there is diagnostic uncertainty.
Practical issues are also discussed centring around the formulating of a provisional cytology report, with a walk through of a sample case.
