Internal Carotid Artery Bifurcation Aneurysm: Treatment with an Intrasaccular Flow Disruptor Contour Neurovascular System; Technical Aspects and Follow-Up Results

Abstract

A 64-year-old female patient with a nonruptured internal carotid artery (ICA) bifurcation aneurysm was treated with a Contour Neurovascular System flow disruptor (Cerus Endovascular) with good angiographic and clinical outcomes. The endovascular treatment of nonruptured carotid bifurcation aneurysms can represent a challenge due to their complex anatomy with sharp angles between the parent vessel and the aneurysm. As endovascular treatment using coils is associated with a considerable risk of thromboembolic events and high recanalization rates, new techniques and devices have appeared to treat this type of aneurysm. The use of endosaccular devices to treat bifurcation aneurysms has been increasingly used in the past few years, avoiding coil deployment near the aneurysm dome which diminishes the risk of the aneurysm rupturing during the procedure and potentially even enables the aneurysm to shrink. The use of intrasaccular devices to treat bifurcation artery aneurysms will be the main topic of this chapter.
