Abstract

The airway is a complex structure which extends from the external nares to the junction of the larynx with the trachea. The infant larynx is structurally very different to the adult larynx especially in infancy and becomes less so as the child grows. The signs and symptoms of a child with respiratory distress depends on the location and severity of the obstruction. It is therefore essential to assess and localize the site and cause of the obstruction.
