Definitional and Conceptual Issues
The same level of complexity of defining “Europe” – which can be seen as a geographical, cultural, historical, economic, and political entity – applies to characterizing Europeanization. Teichler (2003) reminds us that terminology in the area of higher education is not consistently used in the academic literature and that key terms and concepts are evolving over time. However, one way of conceptualizing Europeanization in the context of higher education is to regard it as a specific form of internationalization of higher education. Internationalization usually entails discourses surrounding study abroad programs and internationally oriented curricula, both aimed at preparing students for living and working in international contexts.
