Description
This special issue highlights the forefront of research, encompassing various aspects from traditional vibration monitoring to cutting-edge applications relevant to operational modal analysis, damage identification, model updating, investigation on environmental effects, and indirect approaches for structural health monitoring. The papers present compelling case studies on timber buildings, wind turbines, ancient and modern towers, bridges, stadiums, and dams. 

The special issue is by invitation only.

Submission guidelines
All papers must be prepared in accordance with the Instructions for Authors at: https://link.springer.com/journal/13349/submission-guidelines (this opens in a new tab).
Articles for this special issue should be submitted via our submission system Editorial Manager (this opens in a new tab). During the submission process you will be asked whether you are submitting to a special issue, please select "Vibration-based Monitoring of Civil Structures: Innovative Applications and Lessons Learnt" from the dropdown menu.
 
Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work, relevant to one of the topics of the special issue. All papers will be evaluated on the basis of relevance, significance of contribution, technical quality, scholarship, and quality of presentation by at least two reviewers. It is the policy of the journal that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the review process.

Please note that the authors of selected papers presented at EVACES 2023 are invited to submit an extended version of their contributions by taking into consideration both the reviewers’ comments on their conference paper, and the feedback received during presentation at the conference. It is worth clarifying that the extended version is expected to contain a substantial scientific contribution, e.g., in the form of new algorithms, experiments or qualitative/quantitative comparisons, and that neither verbatim transfer of large parts of the conference paper nor reproduction of already published figures will be tolerated. The extended versions of EVACES 2023 papers will undergo the standard, rigorous journal review process and be accepted only if well-suited to the topic of this special issue/topical collection and meeting the scientific level of the journal. Final decisions on all papers are made by the Editor-in-Chief.

Meet the Guest Editors:
New Content ItemPier Francesco Giordano is an Assistant Professor at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. He is a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship Awardee and IDEA League fellow. In 2021, he earned his Ph.D. in Architecture, Built Environment, and Construction Engineering (DABC) from Politecnico di Milano with honors (Cum Laude). He also holds an Erasmus Mundus Master’s degree in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions (SAHC). He served as Scientific Secretary for EVACES 2023. Dr. Giordano’s main research interests include Value of Information and Structural Health Monitoring. He is involved in several National and European research projects. 

New Content ItemSaid Quqa is an Assistant Professor at the University of Bologna, Italy. He is also a collaborator of the Active, Responsive, Multifunctional, and Ordered-materials Research (ARMOR) Lab at UC San Diego, USA. In 2022, he earned his Ph.D. in Civil, Chemical, Environmental, and Materials Engineering from University of Bologna. He served as Scientific Secretary for EVACES 2023. Dr. Quqa’s main research interests include dynamic identification and structural health monitoring of structural systems, with a specific focus on bridges excited by vehicular loads.
