This second edition of the multi-volume work goes beyond the comprehensive and systematic coverage of archaeology that appears in the first edition. The field of archaeology continues to grow and the collaborations between archaeologists and researchers in other areas - environmental studies, landscape studies, art history, demography, biomedicine, chemistry, museum specialists, etc. – continue to increase.

This second edition builds on the massive collection of information and research from the first edition by adding new entries as well as updating the existing entries. The entries in this encyclopedia range from succinct summaries of specific sites and the scientific aspects of archaeological enquiry to detailed discussions of archaeological concepts, theories and methods, and from investigations into the social, ethical and political dimensions of archaeological practice to biographies of leading archaeologists from throughout the world. The different forms of archaeology are explored, along with the techniques used for each and the challenges, concerns and issues that face archaeologists today.

This compendium is both a print reference and an online reference work. A major innovation of the encyclopedia is that it harnesses the capabilities of an online environment, enhancing both the presentation and dissemination of information. Most particularly, the continuous updating allowed by an online environment should ensure that the Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology is a definitive reference work for archaeology and archaeologists.

  Claire Smith

Claire Smith is an Associate Professor at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia and a researcher at the Institute of the Advances Study for Humanitiy at the University of Newcastle, Callaghan, Australia.  She has been a visiting scholar at Lock Haven University, Pennsylvania, the University of Cape Town, South Africa and Pitzer College, California and Columbia University, New York and the University of Denver and has also lectured in Portugal, England, Canada, the USA, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, Nigeria and Japan.

Dr. Smith earned her PhD in archaeology at the University of New England in Australia. Following this, she was awarded an Australian Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship. She was appointed to the faculty at Flinders University in 1998. In 2000-2001 she held a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship, hosted jointly by the Smithsonian National Museum for Natural History and the American University, Washington, D.C, USA.

Dr. Smith's main field of experience is in Indigenous archaeology. While she has conducted field research with Aboriginal communities in Australia, Asia and North America, she mostly works with Aboriginal people from the Barunga region of the Northern Territory, and with Ngadjuri people from South Australia..

In 2006, Dr. Smith was one of six invited specialists who conducted independent evaluations of the Smithsonian Institution's newly opened National Museum of the American Indian. She is a member of the Public Education Committees of the Australian Archaeological Association and the Society for American Archaeology.

She has been the president of the World Archaeological Congress since 2003.

Policies and ethics
