Abstract

What shapes our current understanding of the public servant? Theory can provide us with some guidance, but theory itself is shaped by our histories, and not everyone’s history is shared. This introduction provides an overview of the contributions in this section and the broad net that has been cast to bring them together in one place.

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” – Juliet in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet

“There is nothing more practical than a good theory.” (Lewin 1952: 169)
