A Combination of Spider-Man and Mother Teresa: The Image of Social Workers in Polish TV Drama The Deep End

Abstract

After 30 years of constant transformations, the role of the social worker in Poland encapsulates the core inconsistencies and tensions within the country’s hybrid welfare state system. It is a result of ideas imported by academic circles since the early 1990s, ideologies dominant in the public sphere, the configuration of interests, and financial shortages in the welfare sector. At the same time, social workers never became full figures or independent actors in the welfare debate. Their public image has been shaped mostly via media scandals or episodes of moral panic.

This paper discusses an attempt to construct the legitimate portrayal of these people in a 25-episode TV drama commissioned by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy in 2011, produced and broadcast by the public broadcaster in Poland, TVP. Its aim was openly persuasive – to improve the public image of social services and social workers. As an explicit statement about welfare issues from the symbolic elites, the production comprises a unique data corpus. This study reveals how the depiction of social workers in the show overlapped with ideas which were dominant in the Polish welfare debate, rather than challenging them.
