Marine Positioning. The determination of offshore position by means of technology such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and acoustic transponders for the purposes of marine vessel navigation, charting, offshore construction, resource extraction, and scientific research

Introduction

Marine positioning, as opposed to marine navigation, refers to offshore position determination of a marine vessel. This form of positioning, in the modern context, is precise, e.g., at the meter level or higher (horizontal, 1-sigma), and can be produced in real time or after the fact (post-processed).

The requirement for offshore position information is application specific, as are the positioning performance specifications. The common theme is the need for positioning (often precise positioning) far from shore infrastructure, making offshore environments very challenging for accuracy and precise positioning with high solution availability and integrity, often in real-time situations....
