Definition

GNSS ambiguity resolution . The process of estimating the integer parameters of a mixed-integer model, based on their real-valued estimates and associated variance-covariance matrix.

GNSS ambiguity validation . Applying an acceptance test to decide whether or not the estimated integer ambiguities are reliable enough.

Introduction

The GNSS carrier-phase observations are ultra-precise but ambiguous by an unknown number of integer cycles. Once these so-called integer ambiguities are resolved to their correct integer values, the carrier-phase observations start to act as pseudoranges with two orders of magnitude better precision than the code observations. In the early 1990s, the theory for resolving the integer ambiguities has been largely developed, but research has been carried out ever since on several aspects, such as the integer validation, computational efficiency, and partial ambiguity resolution. An extensive overview of the theory can be found in Teunissen (2010).
