GNSS meteorology. Estimation of atmospheric parameters from GNSS observations and the subsequent use of those in meteorology.

Introduction

Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), such as the United States Global Positioning System (GPS), have become indispensable for positioning and navigation applications, and have proven highly useful for the realization of terrestrial reference systems and geodynamical studies. Atmospheric delays in the ionosphere and neutral atmosphere (mostly troposphere) are major error sources if high accuracy is required. While the ionospheric delays can be mostly eliminated by observing at two or more frequencies, the tropospheric delays do not change with frequency and have to be modeled appropriately, which requires the estimation of residual delays in the analysis of GNSS observations (chapter “Atmospheric Modelling”).
