An alchemist, inventor, engineer, and natural philosopher, Drebbel fits in the vernacular maker’s knowledge tradition (Smith, Pamela, The body of the artisan: Art and experience in the scientific revolution. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2004) during a period of changing status for meteorology and alchemy.
