Abstract

A Basilian monk, theologian, Catholic bishop, and scholar, Barlaam the Calabrian († 1348) is one of the most interesting figures in pre-Renaissance culture. He is known for having started the so-called Hesychast controversy, probably the most crucial cultural and religious event in fourteenth-century Byzantium. However, since his life and career bridges Byzantium and the West, B. is to be regarded as a fourteenth-century forerunner to the later generation of Greek émigrés that provided such impetus to Greek studies in Italy after the fall of Constantinople. His acquaintance with Francesco Petrarca, Leonzio Pilato, and possibly Giovanni Boccaccio and Paolo da Perugia suffices to establish B. as an important figure in the history of Greek studies in the pre-Renaissance West. B.’s reputation was also called into question during the Renaissance Plato-Aristotle controversy, as in the fifteenth century Francesco Filelfo conjectured that this had begun with B.’s alleged attacks against Plato.
