Abstract

A man of letters, historiographer, linguist, mathematician, and architectural historian, Bernardino Baldi may be regarded as a classic embodiment of the all-round Renaissance man. He has left his mark practically in all the fields in which he operated. He was the first modern historiographer of the mathematical sciences. Until this day, his translations of certain technical texts from antiquity, like his lexicographical work on Vitruvius, represent a valuable starting point for further enquiries. Most interesting of all are his insights in the field of mechanics, as Baldi often appears to foreshadow some of the theoretical perspectives that inform Galileo’s later investigations into the strength of materials.
