Nancy Boyd-Franklin, Ph.D.

Introduction

Dr. Nancy Boyd-Franklin is an African-American family therapist, psychologist, and a Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University in the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP). Her pioneering work on the treatment of African-American and other ethnic minority families has made a significant contribution to the literature on multiculturalism and race within the family therapy field. Prior to the 1980s, race was often ignored in the mental health and family therapy literature and practice. Dr. Boyd-Franklin’s groundbreaking body of work and her innovative Multisystems Model have contributed to a definitive shift in the field to a strength-based and culturally sensitive approach to treatment.
