Definition

Scintigraphic procedure to visualize Somatostatin Receptor (SSTR) 2 positive tumors. Usually used in the setting of well-differentiated neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP–NET).

Principle

Indium-111 is a gamma rays emitting isotope with a relatively long half-live of 2.8 days. Pentetreotide (DTPA-Octreotide) is a somatostatin analog mainly binding to SSTR2 carrying the radioactive Indium-111. The radioactive isotope the decays by emitting gamma rays which are collimated to a specific geometry and then detected by a gamma camera. The imaging protocol usually consists of planar imaging and tomographic single photon emission tomography (SPECT) imaging.

Methodology

Scintigraphic planar and tomographic SPECT are usually acquired after 4 h, 24 h, and 48 h. Special caution has to be given to pregnancy, breast feeding, and children. In these cases, nonradiant alternatives need to...
