Definition

Tumors of uncertain malignant potential (UMP) are encapsulated or well-circumscribed follicular-patterned thyroid tumors with questionable capsular or vascular invasion, independent of the presence or absence of papillary carcinoma (PTC)-type nuclear alterations. There are two types of UMP tumors (Tallini and Giordano 2018):

  • Follicular Tumor of Uncertain Malignant Potential (FT-UMP): A tumor of well-differentiated follicular cells with no PTC-type nuclear alterations that is encapsulated or well circumscribed in which capsular or vascular invasion is uncertain, i.e., a tumor with pathologic features indeterminate between follicular adenoma and follicular carcinoma.
