Definition
Calcifying aponeurotic fibroma (CAF) is a rare tumor, usually occurring on the hands or feet, especially in the first and second decades of life. It is infiltrative in nature, so has a relatively high local recurrence rate.
Clinical Features
Incidence
CAF is a very rare soft-tissue tumor. Fewer than 100 cases of it have been reported in the English literature since 1953. In almost all cases, there was no association with other diseases, with just a single case being complicated with Masson’s tumor (Romano et al. 2017).
Age
CAF usually occurs in children and adolescents but has been reported over a wide range of ages. Indeed, our literature review shows that the ages of reported CAF patients range from 2 months to 71 years (median 10 years).
Sex
A male predominance of this condition has been reported, and the literature review (Table 1) also reveals a slight tendency for this (M:F = 26:22).
