Introduction

Depending on the underlying pathology and its location within the organ, a wide range of surgical techniques for the operative treatment of pancreatic diseases is available. The most common procedures are the resection of the pancreatic head (including the Whipple procedure) and the resection of the pancreatic body/tail, the so-called distal or left pancreatectomy (Kleeff et al. 2016).

Partial Pancreaticoduodenectomy with or Without Pylorus Preservation

Partial pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) also referred to as the Whipple operation is a complex surgical procedure for the treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the periampullary region. Common indications to perform a PD include malignancies, most importantly pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, followed by distal bile duct cholangiocarcinoma, adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vateri, and duodenal adenocarcinoma.
