Introduction

Surgery is the only curative treatment option for patients with pancreatic cancer. Due to the anatomic location and tumor growth patterns, vascular infiltration is common. Resectability of pancreatic cancer patients is based on the extent of vascular infiltration and metastasis and can be divided in four groups: resectable, borderline resectable, locally advanced, and with metastatic disease. The aim of this entry is to describe the surgical treatment options and techniques of vascular resection and reconstruction in surgery for pancreatic cancer.

The gold standard in the diagnosis and staging of pancreatic cancer patients is a CT- or MRI-scan of the abdomen. The internationally most accepted definition of resectability is from the International Study Group (ISGPS) and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) (Bockhorn et al. 2014).
