Definition
Tropical pancreatitis is a type of nonalcoholic chronic pancreatitis prevalent in developing countries (Barman et al. 2003; Mahurkar et al. 2009; Paliwal et al. 2014). In contrast to alcoholic chronic pancreatitis, it occurs at a younger age (Barman et al. 2003; Tandon 2007; Tandon and Garg 2004). Histologically, intraductal calculi are predominant (Barman et al. 2003; Tandon and Garg 2004). Tropical pancreatitis seems to have multifactorial causes, with malnutrition, cassava consumption, oxidative stress, and genetic factors being described as contributing factors (Mahurkar et al. 2009; Paliwal et al. 2014; Tandon 2007).
