Definition

Morphological changes related to aging, usually without clinical relevance, mostly being represented by lipomatosis and fibrosis. Lipomatous atrophy due to long-lasting ductal obstruction (Shimizu et al., 1997) or genetic diseases (Levin et al., 2015; Mandavdhare et al., 2017) and fibrosis due to obstruction or chronic pancreatitis do not fit to this definition (Esposito et al., 2020).

Clinical Features

  • Incidence

    According to autopsy series performed in individuals without known pancreatic pathology, the frequency of clinically not relevant changes, such as lipomatosis, is quite high, being detected in about 94% of the analyzed cases (Stamm, 1984). Imaging studies based on endoscopic ultrasound have shown an overall prevalence of lipomatosis of 27.8% and of 100% in the group of individuals older than 90 years (Choi et al., 2010).
