Definition

These are cystic lesions seen in the vaginal wall.

Clinical Features

Mostly discovered incidentally at gynecological examination (Kondi-Pafiti et al. 2008).

  • Age

    Adults

  • Site

    Mullerian-type cysts are most common anterolaterally, Gartner’s duct (mesonephric) cysts are seen laterally, and epithelial inclusion cysts are seen at the site of previous episiotomy or injury.

  • Treatment

    Removal or marsupialization

  • Outcome

    Benign

Macroscopy

Collapsed cystic structure or membranous cyst wall is seen. Epithelial inclusion cysts may be filled with keratinous material

Microscopy

As the name implies, Mullerian-type cysts are lined by endocervical-type, endometrial, or tubal-type epithelium (Fig. 1a, b). Focal metaplastic squamous epithelium can be seen.
