Corpus Luteum Cyst

Definition

Corpus luteum cyst is a nonneoplastic lesion arising from physiological process; its enlargement of cystic corpus luteum is over 3 cm.

Clinical Features

  • Incidence

    Corpus luteum cyst is common diagnosis.

  • Age and Sex

    The frequency of the corpus luteum cysts is more common in reproductive age women. They are rare in the neonatal age and would usually follow sporadic ovulation in a postmenopausal women.

  • Site

    Corpus luteum cyst is an ovarian lesion.

  • Treatment

    Corpus luteum cysts are usually treated by monitoring as most of them will regress spontaneously within 2 months. Resection is recommended if the patient has symptoms of ovarian torsion or rupture (Lee et al. 2017).

  • Outcome

    Most cases will regress spontaneously (Minelli 1996).

Macroscopy

Corpus luteum cysts are usually solitary, ranging in size from 3 to 8 cm in diameter and characterized by yellow, convoluted wall. The cyst is filled with hemorrhagic fluid.
