Definition

Authority is a social relationship between two or more people or objects where one is accorded the right to direct the others in some respect.

Introduction

Authority is perhaps one of the defining characteristics of organizations, and it tends to be taken for granted, yet it is seldom the object of reflection or research. This is all the more surprising as it was an object of reflection in the work of Max Weber, one of the founding figures of sociology, and was the object of research in Stanley Milgram’s experiments into obedience to authority, one of the most famous and controversial social psychology experiments.
