i-Labs and Public Administration: Public Innovation and the Future of Public Sector

Introduction

The introduction of public innovation labs (i-labs or living labs) came together with the emergence of an open/smart governance paradigm in public management. Different authors foresaw the first steps of a public governance paradigm based on networks and the growing involvement of the society and different societal actors in public affairs and public decision-making. Nowadays, different studies support the idea that there exists a turning point in the evolution of public sector management, implying a new paradigm named open/smart governance. Among other aspects, this new paradigm is also related to the fourth technological revolution, including innovation in the public sector. This new trend has i-labs as one of the platforms to adopt innovative practices in the public sector and coproduction practices.
