Public policies on migration in Latin America

Definition

In 2019, the United Nations called on States to sign the nonbinding Global Migration Pact, after the objective of establishing a framework agreement that represents countries in achieving “safe, orderly and regular migration,” from an international cooperation approach.

Some countries, including Chile, would have changed their historical position regarding the relevance of multilateralism and the assessment of the international regime, deciding not to subscribe to it. In this regard, it is relevant to understand the current situation of immigration and the challenge it poses to the international system as a whole and especially in Latin America.
