Introduction
Regrettably, when speaking of capitalism as the dominant social and economic system frequently enough, the discussions by both the proponents and the opponents remain at the level of ideology. In the memorable words of John Kenneth Galbraith (1998, p. 6), our asserted understandings of capitalism, and its alternatives, often become forms of “conventional wisdom,” a situation where concepts that have entered the social mainstream have become so commonly (mis)used that they continue being accepted because of their popularity rather than the veracity of the original ideas behind them, which are often forgotten. Labels are commonly attached, but not always are the meanings of the concepts, as well as their historical underpinnings, carefully reviewed on their own terms.
