Definition

Angiotensin (angio means “blood vessels” and tensin means “increase pressure”) is an oligopeptide hormone in blood plasma that increases blood pressure by vasoconstriction. It is a key harmone of the Renin–Angiotensin system (RAS) in human, which regulates blood pressure and body fluid balance.

In addition to harmone, angiotensin is a dipsogen (an agent that causes thirst) too. It also stimulates the secretion of aldosterone from zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex to increase sodium retention by the kidneys.

Activation and Synthesis

The RAS can be activated in cases when there is loss of blood volume or reduced blood pressure sensed by baroreceptors in carotid sinus. In addition, reduced filtrate NaCl concentration or reduced filtrate flow also triggers RAS activation by stimulating juxtaglomerular cells of kidney to release renin harmone.

Angiotensin is derived from the precursor molecule angiotensinogen (produced in the liver) under...
