Definitions

Workplace violence is “…any physical assault, threatening behavior, or verbal abuse occurring in the work setting” (NIOSH 1996). The Workplaces Respond resource center defines workplace violence as a violent threat or the act of violence targeting a person who is working. Violence can vary from intimidating language to a murder committed by anyone, including coworkers and management (Futures n.d.).

Sexual harassment is unsolicited sexually leaning conduct by someone in the workplace. Sexual harassment is also defined as a form of discrimination and therefore is a sex-related crime under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Woerner and Oswald 1990).

Introduction

Sex-related workplace violence is linked to sexual harassment and other sex-related crimes. With criminal intent, sexual violence can be perpetrated by a coworker or an individual who has no reasonable association in the workplace.
