Definition
Acceptable risks in maritime security are those that are determined to be residual risk after risk treatments have been implemented or have been accepted after a rigorous and defensible security risk assessment has been conducted. Acceptable risks fall within the risk owner’s risk tolerance.
Introduction
The maritime domain is a diverse and complex, multinational environment that does not easily lend itself to universally acceptable risks. Therefore, the key to understanding risk management and the determination of acceptable risks in the maritime domain is to understand the unique features of the maritime domain as well as key considerations in determining acceptable risks in maritime security. This entry provides an overview of the maritime domain and its unique characteristics, introduces the concept of security risk and its components, and identifies the concepts of risk tolerance and treatment as key elements in the determination and management of acceptable risks....
