Definitions

Homegrown terrorism is acts of terrorism targeting the citizens, institutions, or government within the country in which the terrorist resides. Homegrown terrorism falls into two categories: domestic terrorism and homegrown violent extremism (HVE).

  • Domestic terrorism is acts of terrorism inspired by the US-based movements that espouse extremist ideologies of a political, religious, social, racial, or environmental nature. (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2018) ∗Domestic terrorism is examined more fully in a separate section of this encyclopedia.

  • Homegrown violent extremist (HVE) refers to a US-born or naturalized citizen who is inspired by the ideology of a foreign terror organization to commit acts of terrorism targeting the citizens, institutions, or government within the United States. Many HVEs act independently and do not receive any financial or operational support from the foreign terror organization (Bjelopera, 2018).
