Definition
The following discussion addresses issues in school safety and security inclusive of strategies such as risk assessments and risk management principles that apply to safety and security concerns for educational institutions.
Introduction
These principles should provide the foundation for planning and prevention efforts at schools throughout the nation. Merriam Webster (2019) defines security as “the quality or state of being secure: such as freedom from danger: SAFETY, or freedom from fear or anxiety.” When discussing the topic of security at educational institutions, the term security is typically accompanied with the word safety as observed in Webster’s definition, since safety and security coexist in the development of plans, prevention efforts, and response actions designed to keep people and property safe.
