Definition
Families are one of the central arenas in society where gender issues are realized and enacted. Specifically, the unequal relationships between men and women are often an important and yet overlooked aspect of family life.
The Significance of Families
Around the world, families continue to remain fundamental for societies. They matter to the safety and security of individuals, and they provide much-needed services to societies. Family relationships are key to the sharing of resources such as shelter, food, and money, and it is within families that children receive their earliest care and primary socialization. Families continue to provide care across the life span including for other vulnerable members such as the terminally ill, individuals with disabilities, and fragile elderly.
