Definitions

Gender mainstreaming is an approach that takes into account interests and concerns of women and men including gender nonconforming individuals (GNC) into policy planning and implementation (see United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs 1997). Related to this are the concepts of gender equality and gender equity. The former seeks to ensure equal rights and opportunities for all persons regardless of gender while the latter serves to level the playing field by integrating the gender-based differences and applying different approaches to produce equitable outcomes. Equity is therefore essential to achieve true equality (UoM 2018).
