Definition
Gender roles are notions observed in many patriarchal societies which tend to center on issues of work and family. Gender roles are socially constructed, stereotypical perceptions about appropriate, desirable, or acceptable behavior and attitudes of men and/or women based on their gender. Delphy (1984) suggests that female gender roles are constructed as an opposite to an ideal male role and so help to perpetuate patriarchy. Men as breadwinners and women as homemakers are one of those models that captures classical gender roles and gender division of labor (Davis 2012). Sex roles are also alternatively used in a similar context.
