Definitions
Prevention of waste consists of eliminating or reducing the amount of waste that is generated and minimizing the hazardous content of the waste, reducing its impact on the environment, and saving costs for the different actors in the value chain. It should not be understood as a management operation for wastes but as a measure taken before products become wastes. For the citizens, the prevention of waste comprehends more singular act that comprises small individual actions; for the business, it is a new kind of thinking regarding to the productive process; and for the government, it corresponds to incentives through public policies. It also can be said that the prevention of waste is a fundamental change of the socio-technical system of waste infrastructures with its elements and requires a transition end-of-pipe technologies toward the management of resources.
