Definition
The term “cultural ecosystem services” is defined within a wider framework of ecosystem services as “non-material benefits that people obtain from ecosystems through spiritual enrichment, cognitive development, reflection, recreation and aesthetic experience” (MA 2005).
These are tangible and intangible “goods and chattel” that people gain through their own experience in interaction with landscapes, resulting in information about “natural and cultural diversity, spiritual and religious values, knowledge systems, educational values, inspiration, aesthetic values, social relations, sense of place, cultural heritage, recreation and ecotourism” (MA 2005).
The main idea of designation of cultural dimension of ecosystem services, which comes up as a mutual task from the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD 2009), Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA 2005), Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB 2010), and European Landscape Convention (ELC 2000), is to provide insights...
